BOOK: Adventure IllustratedISSUE: Winter Issue Number One COMPANY: New Media Publishing, Inc. STORY: Rayder WRITTEN BY: Mark Evanier ILLUSTRATED BY: Mike Sekowsky and Alan Gordon LETTERED BY: Tom Orzechowski GOING PRICE: I paid $5.00 on Ebay. I don't know it's actual value. This book is a great little treasure. It's a compilation of stories, five in all. I'm only reviewing one of the stories in particular, though. I'm reviewing the Mark Evanier story, "Rayder". There are some other greats in here though: Bill Sienkiewicz, Pat Boyette and Alan Gordon to name a few. Another great science fiction story! In the society of future, church and state have finally become one. To question the infallibility of God was blasphemous! Sex without being married... punishable by death. Scientific and medical advances were not even allowed, because this was not what God or the Government wanted! The human race came to a screetching halt. I mean, really, imagine if our planet could not advance in anyway what-so-ever! People would go insane. It is in our human nature to strive ever forward. To delve ever deeper into the mysteries of life. So, the heart of the story is about Rayder and Loyita, two people in love, but hunted by a misguided government. After replacing a lost limb on a person, using medical science, Rayder and Loyita quickly become hunted outlaws by Tribunal (the so called God/Government). The two escaped. Later in the story, Loyita is killed, saving Rayders life. Rayder basically goes beserk on the enforcer that killed his beloved. He then decides that he's going to use medical science and bring back Loyita through her DNA, not giving a tinkers cus about what the Tribunal thinks. I really won't give away much more, otherwise I'd be telling you the entire story. The second half is in the next issue of Adventure Illustrated, which I cannot find for the life of me, so if you come acroos one, let me know and I just may buy it from you. This is a great read for those that are into Sci Fi stories! - Shane |
